Holburn Junction

Aberdeen

This social housing project is based on a busy site on the edge of the Aberdeen City centre. The project aims to raise issues of modern living using the architecture as a platform. It does this through not only creating a community of individual and shared dwellings but through the added values of facilities such as a daycare, community cafe, gym facilities mental health drop in centre and also a small supermarket in a pre-existing tenement.

The project is split into three blocks, with a new public "street" running in-between with the blocks being visually linked by hybrid circulation cores. These spaces are neither indoor nor outdoor, being protected only by glazed louvers that are user operated. On the lower level building, there is a roof garden that can be used by the residents and create a moment of serenity in a busy urban site.
